October 2020 Newsletter


We would like to welcome everyone back to our academy and give a special welcome to new students and parents.  With Auckland back at Alert Level 1 we now welcome back parents and spectators into the building but ask that you:

·      Stay home if you are sick

·      Keep up good hygiene – dancers are to wash hands before and after lessons

·      Continue to sign in with the Covid tracing app on your phone (adults only not students)


Term 4 begins on Monday 12th October.  No dancing on Labour Day 26th October (classes still on Saturday 24th October).  Term 4 Fees to be paid by Saturday 17th October if you wish to receive the prompt payment discount.  All Term 4 fees must be paid by 31st of October.


All fees to be paid in the first 3 weeks of the term.  From the 4th week on, only paid up members of the academy will be accepted into the classes.   Prompt payment discount is subtracted only if paid by 17th of October.


Please work out your fees from the chart below.  I will not be doing any invoices – but if your fees are too complicated to work out just ask for one.

·      Cheques may be put directly into the ‘fee’ box through the office window.  

·      If paying cash, please pay the office and receive a receipt.

·      Fees may be banked directly into AWDA account – See the office for details

From the 4th week on, only paid up members of the academy may participate in classes.   All fees include GST.  


Show rehearsal fees have been added in the table below:

NOTE:  If you are in more than one item you still pay only one $15 rehearsal fee.  

Extra discount for multiple lessons per week:

10% for 2 or more classes per week

UNLIMITED LESSON PACKAGE – $600 (t&c’s – for one sibling only, no other discounts apply, does not include competition, open item or private lessons).  


Please subtract the multiple lesson discount after taking off the prompt payment discount and then add the rehearsal fee. Please note that there are no refunds given or fee credits for missed classes.  Make-up lessons are allowed for missed classes.  Note that prizes and prize giving cannot be given to students whose fees remain unpaid.



Reminder – Students Only weeks are in the downstairs studios’, viewing is only in studio 1.


If you are not going to attend a lesson please let the teacher know or contact the studio office.

If you wish to drink water during the dance lesson please bring your own water bottle (and remember to take it home with you).  The cupboard in the kitchen has many unclaimed water bottles – please check this as unclaimed bottles will be discarded by the end of October.  Please check the lost property box as unclaimed items will be donated to the Salvation Army at the end of the month


Grooming – Please ensure that correct AWDA dance uniform is worn to lessons and that hair is in a tidy bun for all genres (except hip hop – a ponytail or plait is acceptable).  


Trophy request – If you won a trophy last year and have not yet returned it please do so ASAP ensuring that your name has been engraved on it and that it is in a clean condition.


No Smoking – Please respect our studio and our students and ensure that there is no smoking anywhere inside or outside of AWDA premises. 


SHOW – “FREEDOM    Avondale College Performing Arts Centre.  

** If you wish to take part in our show you must be available for ALL the rehearsals and shows.   Most of our costumes will be hired this year.  I realise that this might be disappointing to some students who like to keep their costume each year but we have made this decision to try to save money this year for the parents/caregivers and by doing the hire option it reduces the cost of the costume from around $80 per costume on average to around $30 approximately this year.  If your costume is being made you will be notified and this cost will be higher than this but not as high as in previous years. 


It is also important for dancers to be available for measuring or make other arrangements if they can’t be there, and deposits need to be paid promptly as hire costumes have to be paid in advance and the studio has to pay a bond on these.


This year we hope to have two performances in which all dancers will be performing in both shows. Our shows will be on 2 consecutive days: 

Sunday 6 December 2:30pm show – All items with the Junior Prize Giving

Monday 7 December 6:30pm show – All items with the Senior Prize Giving

In order to run the show at Avondale College and cover the high costs involved in this we need your support in promoting and selling tickets to your friends and family.  If we do not have enough numbers then we will only be able to hold one show performance this year.


JUNIOR – Little Dancers, Pre Primary, Primary, Dance Stars, Junior Jazz, Pre Grade, Grade 1-3, Contemporary Level 4, Grade 1-3 Tap, Level 1-4 Hip Hop.


SENIOR – Grade 4 and above Ballet, Jazz and Tap, Senior & Advanced Hip Hop, Senior Contemporary, Lyrical (all levels).


Rehearsals: Each item will have a rehearsal after school either Wednesday 2 December or Thursday 3 December.  This will be for 45 minutes to an hour.  Times and date TBC.

Then we have a full dress rehearsal on Saturday 5th December.  Dancers in the first half of the show will be in the morning until lunchtime.  Juniors will have their finale practice at mid-day with notes for parents.  Dancers in the second half of the show will be in the afternoon.  Seniors finale practice will be after the 2nd half rehearsal.  Please note for parents/guardians during show performances that you are only allowed backstage if you are the official helper for a show group or if you are helping with a quick change.  


We expect the show to run for approximately 2 ½ hours including prize giving.  There is limited car parking in the school grounds so please allow time to walk to the theatre after parking.

We will have a better idea of the length of the show when the music has been recorded.  


Grades are worked out by what grade you are NOW, not by what grade you sat in your last exam.  


Show programme – A copy will be up on the window downstairs soon  – please check your name is spelt correctly and that your name is in the right item.  If you have more than one item check there is time to change between your items.  Many of our students will have only 1 or 2 items to change!!  Fast change dressing rooms are for dancers with 2 items or less to get changed in or 3 items for younger students. Please do not add your name to the fast change dressing room list as we are at maximum numbers for these dressing rooms.

Children’s tickets – $20.00


NoteAvondale College has 12 rows of flat seating then the tiered seating. Please note the bottom row of the tiered seating is only slightly higher than the flat rows.  The best seats will be the tiered seating, then the flat rows – the closer to the stage the better.  Ticket prices have managed to stay the same as last year. Please note that we have reduced to only two shows this year, therefore we expect both shows to sell out so get in quick to avoid disappointment. 


NoteDancers must not come into the audience on the nights they perform, so please do not order tickets for them.
